Art and Philosophy: Humanities Electives
Studio Art
In this class, students are offered a general view of the art world as a whole. Students study two-dimensional art, three-dimensional art, photography, digital art, art history, and art criticism. Students in this course are ready to explore the many aspects of fine art with an open mind.
Photography
Photography students explore the world of photography on many different levels as they use Single Lens Reflex cameras and learn how to use and maintain darkroom equipment and chemicals. Students learn the artistic principals of composition, value, focus, and subjective and objective considerations. Students shoot 10 rolls of film each semester and create portfolios of 15 to 20 prints each.
Drawing and Painting
This class offers students the opportunity to explore the potential of the two-dimensional art world by providing them with a strong foundation of basic skills to allow them to explore their individual artistic vision. Students explore a variety of mediums such as pencil, pen and ink, chalk pastel, charcoal, oil paint, and watercolor.
Ceramics and Sculpture
This class offers students the opportunity to explore the potential of the three-dimensional art world, in which they develop an understanding of the properties of clay, using clay tools, glazing and firing. Students use a potter’s wheel, build pots and other vessels, sculpt ceramics and make molds.
Art and Design
This course introduces students to the basic elements and processes of graphic design and offers them the opportunity to develop a strong working knowledge of the basic principles of design, printing and digital art. Students study historical examples and create their own designs, learn to use Adobe Photoshop Elements to create and edit artwork and learn about graphic design as a profession.
Advanced Art
This course is offered to students who have previous artistic experience and desire to build upon that foundation. Students in this class have the opportunity to focus their energies in one realm while exploring the theoretical aspects of their art. Advanced Art students increase their technical ability in their chosen medium and need strong self-motivation to excel in this class.
Introduction to Philosophy
This course introduces students to the major philosophical issues that have been asked over the centuries: How do I know I exist? What is it to be human? Why am I here? These and other questions are explored through movies, class discussions, reading and demonstrations as students become more thoughtful about their lives and the lives of those around them.
