College Prep Girls Boarding School

Physical Science
Physical Science is the study of matter and energy. Students will explore all manner of non-living material. This includes motion, electricity, magnetism, nuclear energy, wave mechanics, gravity, and simple machines. Additionally, students will learn the basic concepts of chemistry and discover how different materials interact with each other and learn what the consequences of these interactions are. This is a lab intensive class, and students will be expected to master the scientific method as a usable tool.

Biology
Biology is designed as an introductory high school science course. In addition to a curriculum covering all material included in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Biology, a great emphasis is placed on allowing students ample time to discover how science works. Students will be expected to complete a variety of biological experiments, several of which are long-term projects. Students will also expected to develop an appreciation for the history of Biology and knowledge of the men and women who made the significant discoveries that led to our current understanding of the Biological Sciences.

Chemistry

In Chemistry, students will study the types and forms of matter. They will learn about the structure and properties of matter as well as how matter reacts in different situations.Students will be expected to master the Periodic Table and gain insight into how the properties of different materials shape the world around us.Chemistry will be a combination of lecture and experimentation.A significant portion of the class will be dedicated to turning the student into a capable experimenter with a complete understanding of the scientific method.

Earth Science
Earth Science is the study of several disciplines of science including geology, astronomy, meteorology, oceanography and environmental science. Students will be expected to have an understanding of all forces that shape the earth in a historical sense as well as developing an appreciation of how these forces affect the manner in which we live today.Students will be expected to complete several long-term research projects.

AP Environmental Science
AP Environmental Science expands on the knowledge taught in basic environmental science to include an understanding of why events occur in nature as well as the consequences of not understanding basic natural laws. The class is taught as a college level tutorial with students providing much of the insight and questioning.Students will be expected to have a working knowledge of all environmental issues facing humans as well as the political discussions surrounding these issues.
